The Moon Goddess Story:
Long ago, the Jade Emperor lived in a palace in the sky with his ten mischievous sons who turned themselves into ten blazing suns. Their playful antics made the earth unbearably hot. To save the world, Houyi, a skilled archer, shot down nine of the suns, restoring balance and making him a hero. The Jade Emperor rewarded Houyi with a magical elixir of life from the Queen Mother of the West. However, when the elixir was threatened by an evil man, Chang’e, Houyi’s wife, drank it and floated to the moon, becoming the Moon Goddess. Legend has it that Chang’e lives with a jade rabbit, making the elixir of life. On a bright moonlit night, you might spot them and even the eternal woodcutter Wu Gang, who was condemned to chop a giant tree on the moon forever.
