Workshop: Intro to 3D design and printing

This hands-on workshop at Darling Square Library will introduce you to the exciting areas of computer-aided design (CAD), 3D printing and iterative design.

Sat 30 Nov, 11am - 4pm

Over 5 fun hours, you’ll explore different design tools and processes, including how to improve designs with feedback and augmenting basic shapes. Guided by facilitator Heike Roberts, you’ll use these new skills to make your own unique tea light candle holder to take home.

What you’ll learn:

• Creating complex shapes with Autodesk Tinkercad. Tinkercad is an easy-to-use CAD app for 3D design, electronics and coding
• Using an existing template to create a custom tea light design
• Understanding 3D printing, and how to set up and run a 3D print job
• The iterative design cycle – using feedback and augmentation to improve designs.

What you’ll make:

Your very own 3D printed tea light candle holder. Your design will be printed after the workshop and we’ll let you know when it’s ready to collect (please allow up to 2 weeks).

Bookings and class size: Maximum 12 people – bookings are required
Suitable for: Ages 16 years and over
Experience level: This is a beginner project with no required knowledge. An interest in design and desire to expand technical design knowledge, physical making skills and hands-on experience of makerspace equipment is beneficial
Wear: Enclosed shoes and no loose-fitting clothing or jewellery
Bring: Yourself – all materials provided.

Facilitator: Heike Roberts

Heike Roberts has worked as a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) educator for over 10 years. As part of the Modfab team, she has trained teachers and students across Australia in design, CAD and 3D printing.
